Croup
Description
Croup is a viral infection that affects the upper airway, leading to swelling around the vocal cords, resulting in a characteristic “barking” cough. It primarily affects young children and is usually caused by parainfluenza viruses. Symptoms also include hoarseness, stridor (a high-pitched wheezing sound during breathing), and difficulty breathing, especially at night. Most cases are mild and can be treated with supportive care, such as humidified air or corticosteroids. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary for breathing support.
