Rheumatoid Arthritis
Description
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease where the immune system attacks the synovium, the lining of the membranes that surround the joints. This leads to painful swelling, which can result in bone erosion and joint deformity if left untreated. RA typically affects smaller joints like those in the hands and feet, symmetrically. Symptoms include joint pain, swelling, stiffness particularly in the morning, and general fatigue. The cause is not fully understood, but genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors are thought to contribute. Management involves medications to control pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent joint damage, as well as physical therapy and lifestyle changes to maintain joint function and overall health.
