Genital Herpes
Description
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), typically HSV-2, though HSV-1 can also cause genital infections. The virus leads to painful sores or blisters in the genital and anal areas. After the initial infection, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate periodically, leading to recurrent outbreaks. Many people with genital herpes experience mild symptoms or none at all, but some may have frequent and severe outbreaks. There is no cure for genital herpes, but antiviral medications can help control symptoms, reduce the frequency of outbreaks, and lower the risk of transmission to others.
