Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Description
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective myelin sheath around nerve fibers. This damage disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, vision problems, muscle weakness, balance and coordination issues, and various forms of sensory disturbances. MS can follow different courses, from relapsing-remitting, where symptoms come and go, to progressive forms where symptoms steadily worsen. The exact cause of MS isn't known, but genetic and environmental factors are thought to play roles. Treatment aims to manage symptoms, modify the course of the disease, and improve quality of life through medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle adjustments.
