Zygomycosis (Mucormycosis)

Description

Zygomycosis, also known as mucormycosis, is a serious fungal infection caused by Mucorales fungi. It mainly affects people with weakened immune systems, such as those with diabetes, cancer, or after organ transplants. The infection can spread rapidly, leading to severe tissue damage and death if untreated. Symptoms include: Facial swelling, black necrotic tissue, and sinus congestion (when affecting the sinuses), Lung infection with cough, fever, and chest pain, and gastrointestinal infections with abdominal pain and vomiting. Doctors diagnose zygomycosis through tissue biopsy and fungal cultures. Treatment requires urgent antifungal medication (amphotericin B) and surgical removal of infected tissue. Preventive measures include controlling diabetes and avoiding exposure to moldy environments.
