Urticaria (Hives)

Description

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by itchy, raised, red or white welts that appear suddenly. It is often triggered by allergic reactions, infections, medications, stress, or temperature changes. Symptoms include: Raised, itchy welts on the skin (varying in size and shape), Swelling of lips, eyelids, or throat (angioedema in severe cases), Burning or stinging sensation on the skin, and Symptoms may last for hours or persist for weeks (chronic urticaria). Doctors diagnose urticaria based on physical examination and allergy tests. Treatment includes antihistamines, corticosteroids, and avoiding known triggers. Severe cases (associated with anaphylaxis) require epinephrine injection (EpiPen).
