Lichen Planus
Description
Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that affects the skin, mucous membranes, and nails. It presents as flat, purple, itchy patches or sores, often found on the wrists, ankles, and lower back. It can also cause painful sores in the mouth, genital area, and other mucous membranes. The exact cause of lichen planus is not fully understood, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the skin or mucous membranes. Stress, infections, and certain medications can trigger or worsen the condition. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and relieving symptoms, often with topical steroids, antihistamines, or immunosuppressive drugs.
