It can affect any part from the mouth to the anus but most commonly involves the terminal ileum and colon. Symptoms can vary widely but often include abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, and sometimes fever. The inflammation can lead to complications like strictures, fistulas, and nutritional deficiencies. The exact cause isn't known, but it's believed to involve an abnormal immune response to gut bacteria in genetically predisposed individuals.
