A seven-hour flight to Kenya with his four-year-old nephew in pain was the only option left for Ayouba Kamara.
In 2018, young Lawrence Jolo had fallen and broken his back, leaving the family frightened and unsure of what to do.
“We didn’t know what to do or where to go—we were so confused,” recalls Ayouba Kamara, who had traveled from Liberia with Lawrence and his parents.
Hope came through a friend who recommended Kijabe Hospital. Clinging to that one lead, Ayouba and Lawrence’s parents made the decision to come to Kenya.
“When we arrived, we were welcomed with such warmth, and the surgery went well,” he shares. “The way we were treated was amazing—we didn’t expect that, being from a different nationality.”
Before they left in 2018, a follow-up review was scheduled for 2021. But life took an unexpected turn. COVID-19 shut down borders, strained families, and made travel impossible. Worse still, they lost all of Lawrence’s medical reports.
“We wanted so badly to come for the review,” Ayouba says. “But with no documents and no money, we just couldn’t.”
Desperate for options, he reached out to us through Facebook.
“At first, I wasn’t sure anyone would respond—it felt uncertain,” he says. But when a reply came with an unexpected solution, everything changed.
“You advised me to book a telemedicine consultation before planning the trip. I was so relieved. I needed clarification on the reports.”
Through that virtual consultation, Lawrence’s medical files were retrieved, and they were booked for a clinic visit even before they arrived.
“Telemedicine was really helpful. The doctor I spoke to was so kind,” Ayouba says. “Honestly, it’s such a great way to reach people from far away without worrying about flights.”
When they finally made the trip back, they were seen by Dr. Stephen, an orthopaedic surgeon, who gave them the best news: everything was okay.
“I’m going back home a happy man. After the surgery, I didn’t think my nephew would walk again—but now he can walk and even play football,” Ayouba smiles.
“I’ve passed through many countries—Ghana, Senegal, Togo—but we came all the way to Kijabe because it’s an excellent hospital with incredible staff,” he adds.
“And now, through telemedicine, it feels closer than ever.”
Telemedicine has changed the game. You can now access expert care without stepping into the hospital—whether you’re across the country or across borders.
