When Dr. Ouma Oluga walked through our gates yesterday, it wasn’t just another official visit—it was a homecoming. Now serving as Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Oluga began his medical journey here as an intern in 2011.
During the visit, our Executive Director, Dr. Chege Macharia, reflected on the shared history and training: “We are honored to host all our partners and guests walking with us in this journey, including Dr. Oluga. His story resonates deeply. From internship 14 years ago to national leadership today, he exemplifies the kind of healthcare professionals we are committed to nurturing.”
Dr. Oluga shared reflections on his time at Kijabe Hospital and how it shaped his approach to medicine and leadership. “Fourteen years ago, I began my journey here as an intern. Kijabe wasn’t just a training ground—it was a launchpad. I performed over 200 caesarean sections, and those experiences shaped the doctor I am today. This hospital taught me compassion, discipline, and hard work—and above all, to always put patients first,” said Dr. Oluga. “Standing here now fills me with deep nostalgia. This hospital is part of my story.”
He further emphasized the importance of partnerships between the government and faith-based institutions. “You mean so much to us, the Ministry of Health. The journey we walk is a shared one, a shared responsibility for better healthcare in this country. We recognize your contribution to Universal Health Coverage (UHC), especially in reaching underserved communities. Together, we can build a system that is ethical, resilient, and inclusive.”
We were honored to host him, alongside Lari MP Hon. Mburu Kahangara and partners from Africa Mission Healthcare (AMH), Friends of Kijabe, Africa Health Network (AHN), suppliers, contractors, and neighboring institutions who are instrumental in our journey.
As we mark 110 years of service, Dr. Oluga’s story is one of many shaped here—where faith, skill, and compassion come together to impact generations. #CompassionateHealthcare
