Back on his feet after beating stage 4 cancer!

Back on his feet after beating stage 4 cancer!
In April 2024, at the age of 62, Joseph Kirwa from Baringo county was diagnosed with colon cancer at a local facility after months of discomfort and several misleading diagnoses attributing his symptoms to ulcers and amoeba.

Before the correct diagnosis, Joseph endured worsening symptoms. “I had discomfort, my stomach was swelling. Eating, walking and ‘going to the toilet’ became a challenge. That’s when I knew something was wrong,” he recalls.

Unlike many who fall into despair after hearing the word “cancer,” Joseph took a different approach. “I didn’t see it as a death sentence. I realized I was just a patient, like anyone with malaria or pneumonia. I accepted it and focused on what was next.”

Joseph came to our main hospital, where further tests confirmed stage 4 colon cancer. Despite the advanced stage, he remained hopeful. He was admitted and began chemotherapy the same day. “After leaving the doctor’s room, a nurse requested to pray with me and I knew I was in safe hands,” he recalls. He formed close bonds with staff and fellow patients, crediting their support for lifting his spirits.

Though the first chemo session took a toll on his body and mood, he bounced back quickly. By the third session, the swelling reduced, and by the fifth, his appetite returned. After eight sessions, he was discharged in August, feeling full of life. “Every procedure was well explained, the nurses made me feel at home. Not even once did I feel the need for extra care,” he says.

Joseph is now helping change perceptions in his community, where many still believe cancer is untreatable. “I’ve brought three people here after they saw my progress. Cancer is no longer a death sentence. Come to Kijabe, you will recover,” he shares.

Looking back, Joseph is glad he leaned on faith and the support of his family, especially his wife. “Knowing she was back home gave me strength. I wanted to live for her,” he adds, smiling.

Joseph continues to attend his follow-up clinics, hopeful for full recovery. We invite you to keep him in your prayers for his continued recovery.
