Erick Mulinge's Journey with Hearing Aids

Erick Mulinge's Journey with Hearing Aids
“For the first time in my life—I feel seen, heard …..and understood.”
For 14-year-old Erick Mulinge, these aren’t just words. They are a reflection of everything he has endured.
Since the age of five, Erick has struggled with hearing. His mother would call him repeatedly—but he wouldn’t respond. At school, teachers raised concerns about his lack of attention and poor performance. He was forced to repeat several classes, falling further behind his peers.
Unable to hear lessons clearly, Erick relied on lip reading to follow conversations. Despite his best efforts, it was never enough.
By age 14, Erick still couldn’t form a complete sentence. Even the simplest words were difficult to pronounce.
“I always wanted to speak well like my friends, but I couldn’t,” he says, his voice filled with frustration and sadness.
Isolated and self-conscious, Erick withdrew socially.
“Other children laugh at me because I’m grown and still can’t talk well,” he adds, eyes brimming with tears.
Despite visiting over five medical centers, Erick never received the care he needed. His mother simply couldn’t afford it.
In April 2025, everything changed.
Determined not to give up, Erick and his mother travelled from Machakos to our main hospital, holding onto a single hope — that this time would be different.
“I couldn’t keep watching my son suffer. That’s why I brought him here,” his mother says, recalling their journey through tears.
In our ENT clinic, Erick was diagnosed with hearing loss and urgently fitted with hearing aids.
Then, a miracle happened.
For the first time, Erick could hear clearly. As he turned from side to side, responding to his name, joy lit up his face — and brought tears to his mother’s eyes.
“I can hear now. I’ll be able to follow my teachers and perform better,” he says with a hopeful smile.
