Barrett's Esophagus

Description

Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the lining of the esophagus changes due to long-term acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD). The normal squamous cells are replaced by columnar cells, which increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer. Symptoms may include heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and chest pain. Management involves controlling acid reflux with medications and lifestyle changes. In some cases, regular monitoring with endoscopies is needed to check for precancerous changes.
