Ichthyosis
Description
Ichthyosis is a genetic skin disorder characterized by dry, thickened, scaly skin due to abnormal skin cell shedding. The most common type, ichthyosis vulgaris, is inherited, while other types can be acquired due to medical conditions or medications. Symptoms include rough, fish-like scales, itching, redness, and cracks in the skin. The condition worsens in cold or dry climates and can lead to painful skin fissures and infections. Diagnosis is based on physical examination and genetic testing. Treatment focuses on moisturizing creams, exfoliating agents (like salicylic acid or lactic acid), and prescription retinoids to reduce scaling. Proper skin care and hydration help manage symptoms.
