Yaws
Description
Yaws is a chronic bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum pertenue, related to syphilis but not sexually transmitted. It primarily affects children in warm, humid tropical regions and spreads through direct skin contact. Symptoms include: Painless skin sores (initial lesion) that turn into larger ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, Bone and joint pain in severe cases, leading to deformities. Doctors diagnose yaws through skin lesion examination and blood tests. A single dose of penicillin cures the disease. Preventing yaws requires improving sanitation and reducing skin-to-skin contact.
