Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Description
Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins, usually in the legs. It can cause pain, swelling, and redness, but some people may have no symptoms. DVT is dangerous because the clot can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be fatal. Risk factors include prolonged immobility, surgery, pregnancy, and certain medical conditions. Treatment typically involves anticoagulant medications (blood thinners), compression stockings, and lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of further clots.
