AIC Kijabe Hospital has a pharmacy department, which offers quality pharmaceutical services to its clients. The pharmacy department has 23 well-trained qualified pharmacy staff. There are two main pharmacies within the hospital. One pharmacy serves patients admitted to the hospital and the other one serves out patients. There are also five satellite pharmacies. The pharmacies are stocked with about 350 cost effective, quality pharmaceutical products.
A Formulary is available to guide the prescribers on which products are available and to encourage Rational prescribing. The formulary is regularly reviewed and updated by the medicine therapeutics committee. The services offered in pharmacy include dispensing of medications, counseling patients on usage of medications, preparing extemporaneous products, checking and advising on dosages and drug interactions and inventory control.
About 300 prescriptions are filled from our outpatient pharmacy every day. The pharmacy also dispenses antiretroviral drugs to about 5,000 clients every month, which are funded by PEPFAR.The pharmacy staff is involved in training students who are in pharmacy institutions and helping them acquire skills and knowledge.
