Elimu Update (Sept 2015)

A major goal and need at Kijabe is for housing.  In recent years we have added 25 medical officers and clinical officers who do year-long internship at Kijabe, 44 Registered Nurse Anesthesia students, 10 Emergency and Critical Care Clinical Officer trainees, General and Orthopedic Surgery Residents, Pediatric Surgery Fellows, and coming soon are Family Medicine and Pediatric Emergency training programs.  Plus 30 consulting physicians and their families living on Kijabe Station.  On top of this, we have some 60 short-term missionary volunteers who serve at Kijabe this year.  The tiny mission station on the edge of the Rift Vally is quite full!

The hospital put together a long-term housing needs plan, and we are making great progress towards the first phase of the plan, a 3 story, 30 room “hostel” style building designed to house trainees and short-term visitors.  This is the “Elimu” housing project, which is the Swahili word for education.  We do firmly believe the doctors who train at Kijabe will change the face of health care in Sub-Saharan Africa as they serve both with medical excellence and with Christian compassion.

Currently we have raised nearly $400,000 USD of some $550,000 needed to complete the project through what might be termed “grassroots” fundraising.  Most donations have been at $6000, but several very generous individual donors have contributed $50,000 and $100,000.  God has used Kijabe in fantastic ways over the past hundred years, and so many of our friends and colleagues around the world are eager to see the work of AIC Kijabe grow and expand.  So we rejoice at the providence we have seen so far and are excited to see it come to completion.

After a lengthy evaluation process and site-visits by both the architects and our Senior Management Team (pictured below), today was the selection meeting for the contractor who will complete the building.  We hope that groundbreaking will happen by the end of October.

Please do continue to pray for the success of this project, and to partner with us financially, please email David at resmob.kh@gmail.com for more information.
