We are excited to announce the opening of the new Bethany Kids Children’s Center at Kijabe Hospital. Bethany Kids was born some 30 years out a dream of Dr. Dick Bransford to provide surgical care to needy children of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in conditions such of hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Decades later a pediatric neurosurgery team treats these conditions, and a pediatric surgery team cares for patients with a wide range of correctable issues.
The children’s center is a massive, beautiful space for surgery patients to recover and for pediatric inpatients to receive care. Rooms are available for inpatient care, private care, burn recovery, HDU and ICU, consultations, physiotherapy, play, and more. Sufficient to say, it is a dream work environment for our care providers and a greatly improved space for patients.
Construction was a long process involving many dedicated individuals. . .we particularly thank Jim and Julie Taubitz and Tony and Judith Sykes, who served as missionary engineering supervisors.
Dedicated donors to Bethany Relief and Rehabilitation International made the construction possible financially, and many other individuals, churches, and organizations like Samaritan’s Purse and the Lala Salama 100 quilts project contributed to outfitting.
Move-in day occurred on January 23, as patients walked, rolled, or were carried room-by-room from the previous pediatric ward to the new BKCC. Thanks to all the staff who volunteered to help, the transition was quite seamless.
